Conservation and restoration of ceramic tiles (18th century) from the church of St. Anne in Warsaw

Warsaw, suffering for centuries from invasions, fires and conflicts, with an unlikely mark left by the last war, has its history also recorded in preserved monuments. Many of the extant fragments still need to be developed and contain secrets. It was similar with the group of Dutch tiles that I maintained, located in the vestry of the academic church of St. Anne in Warsaw. Conservation efforts restored the objects to aesthetic values, and some of the tiles were reconstructed by making the representations on them more visible. Thanks to this work I was also able to explore the history and technology of Dutch tiles’ manufacturing. I hope that thanks to these actions another “beautiful stranger”of Warsaw will share some secrets about its history.

Work: on the project Fotorejestr, Archeology of Photography Foundation; in conservation teams of Monument Service, Keramejkos, ZKR Sp. z o.o., testing of coloured coatings on ceramics at the Faculty of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw.
